Have a "technician/admin mode" in Query Builder

Status: New
by Copper Super Contributor on ‎10-22-2014 11:56 AM

It would be nice to have an option in query builder to switch from display names for tables and columns to the original names in the database.

This could be accomplished with a simple check box name "technical view" or similar.

The default should be the current behavious, i.e. to show the display names ("end user mode").

This would be very helpful for admins or consultants in heavily customized or - more important - localized versions of the client to "translate" the users intent expressed in domain model names into the "real" world of the underlying database and would make much easier to find tables and columns in SSMS if needed.

If considered, this option should be present in LAN as well as in web.

... AND have the ability to directly edit the Group SQL. If you do this then the "graphic" mode for THIS group/query is automatically "disabled".

To see a GREAT working example of hos this works - take a look at the query building in TaskCentre. This is this is the modern way to do things.. QB is basically the same as it was when SLX was first developed/released over 15 years ago - time to get "modern" ;-)

Suggest this be built in such a way it could be shared with Web and LAN.

Absolutely agreed! QB is long overdue an overhaul to bring it in to the 21st century. As it is, it's very confusing for most users, and even some more technically minded folks alike.

I'd personally like to see a more graphical representation of the query which shows joins and join directions in a similar way to SSMS's query builder along with the added ability to easily edit column definitions without having to click in to new dialogs all the time.

Love your idea to allow direct editing of the SQL, RJ!

@Kev - here's a link to how #TaskCentre does it - a great way to deal w/query:

Great idea and 100% agree that it's long overdue an overhaul. Trying to train users in utilising the query builder is something of a pain right now because of it's complexity. It's time to display field labels instead of SQL field names and allow users to search for the field they wish to include on their query.

Classic example of where this is a pain is the owner field, known as seccodeid in the database. Try explaining that to a group of company directors that want to create their own reports. I promise you'll get a sea of vacant expressions.
