To add to this, I tested this with an Account/Contact created in 2008 and 2014 - Both work. Also, the Account/Contacts are owned by a Team and not set to Everyone. If there is anything else let me know and I will test it here for you.

Yes we did. The web access user exists and was set up according the implementation guide.
It only works when the account is set to Everyone, then it works!
When we change it to a Team it doesn't, we can't log in.
Setting it back it to Everyone and the issue disappears and we are able to log in.

And the CustomerPortal user has access to all teams?

So if you login to the Saleslogix client as the customerportal user do you see the Account/Contact?
If it was me I would delete the existing customerportal user and recreate it as the issue could be down to the user account (some form of corruption)

Yes, the customerportal user does see everything, also the Account/Contact.
We will try to recreate the customerportal user during the weekend.

Okay, we've solved the problem.
The solution was re-creating the customerportal user.
Everything seems to be working fine now.
