Teamwork and Collaboration #SageSummit

by on ‎08-05-2011 10:05 AM defines team-work as “a cooperative or coordinated effort on the part of a group of persons acting together as a team or in the interests of a common cause”. It defines collaboration as “something created by working jointly with another or others”.

I recently volunteered for an event that embodies team-work and collaboration where the results were nothing less than spectacular. The objective was to pull together a handful of musically inclined people that had no knowledge of one another’s experience, skill level or persona and basically entertain a large audience through music for an hour. Let me set the stage ( no pun intended) by saying I pride myself on being optimistic but when I agreed to participate in the activity, I was highly skeptical. I knew going in that expectations were very high, preparation time was minimal and an audience of over 2,000 people would be standing in judgment of what 8 complete strangers could pull together in under 2 hours. I am happy to report how wrong I was! When tested, the group of eight ( later to be known as “The Sagetones and Wicked Heels”) came together as one. All of the differing opinions were set aside, the common interests were thrust to the forefront and those who we thought would be judging us were applauding us. What an incredible experience. I will never doubt the power of teamwork, collaboration and communication again! Although most of you reading this have no real concept of what I am talking about, I want to take this opportunity to thank my team-/collaboration members for one of the most memorable experiences of my life.

It is truly amazing what can happen in such a short period of time when people work together. It was a pleasure and an honour to play with all of you!

Very well said. I was part of that night as well, and it will certainly go down as one of my most memorable experiences. I spoke to several of the people running the stage...and we weren't the only ones who questioned this whole idea and who were pleasantly shocked when it all came together so well.

If there ever was a poster child for teamwork and collaberation this night was it. It was great fun to be part of the night and it was a hoot seeing the other bands on stage having as much fun as I had.
