Having held leadership positions in large organizations for over 17 years, I have made it a priority to include team get-togethers, luncheons, awards/recognition events and off-campus social activities as part of the “business culture” I want to achieve. Interestingly though, following a recent Friday afternoon event, it dawned on me how truly important these activities are. I found myself observing a dynamic that I had not paid close attention to in the past. I saw team-members conversing/laughing that normally do not connect in their normal work day. I watched others exchanging “high fives” and “fist bumps” that I just didn’t think connected at that level. Most importantly, when I walked in to the office on Monday, there was clearly a stronger sense of community and camaraderie across the team. The laughter, the positive attitudes and heightened communication is invaluable to a team. I will never underestimate the importance of team-building in the workplace again. I thought I would share a few pictures as well. I think the smiles tell the story.
