Give users the option on whether they use split view or full page view

In SalesLogix 8.0, Sage changed the layout of the main detail screens. Previously, where you were given a single page with a scroll bar, now you're given a static "detail" view at the top of the screen while your tabs reside underneath.

Although this may be seen by some as a favourable change, we're finding that this decission is proving unpopular with customers because of the way the tabs are now "squashed" at the bottom of the screen. Previously, they enjoyed the ability to view a single page of (for instance) contact information and to scroll up and down at their leisure depending on the data they needed to see.

Although they can use the "minimise" button at the top of the screen, the ability to do this is unpopular because it adds an extra click and hides off additional info that previously, they only had to scroll to the top to view.

Adding an option to allow users to choose between which view they'd like to use would be ideal.

(To clarify, by split view I mean the split between main information at the top and tab information at the bottom. I'm not referring to the LAN client split view where you can view details and group info on the same screen.)

Yep.. a "look-n-feel" change that should have not been implemented without a user choice.. bad fad..

Myself and the global team found the full scroll function in 7.54 very useful, i think a change like this should be an option and not a change across the board.

With the new split view, i find the layout to small and very frustrating when looking for details....

As mentioned, prior to the split, everything was scrolled in a single window. This included the toolbar which meant the user had to scroll to the top to save any changes made to the record. We received a lot of requests to change that experience.

The intent of the split window was to keep the toolbar at the top. In practice, the toolbar and the summary section were too dependent on each other to be separated easily so the split had to occur afer the summary.

The UI is still a work in progress and we will evaulate adding a user-selectable option. Thanks for the suggestion!

I recall supporting the static toolbar (maybe even making the original request), but there was certainly never any intention on my part for the whole "Summary section" to become static.

We now find ourselves in a position where we are unable to upgrade this customer due to a backward step in usability, despite 99% of the upgrade work being complete - I think you can work out what that means for us commercially.

I am disappointed that the user experience has been severly compromised because the split could not "easily" be put in the correct place.

I would like to know when we can expect to see this rectified in order for us to complete this project for our customer.

I have to concur that the decision to implement a split screen has not proved popular with customers. The usability feels like a backward step and doesn’t constitute a upgrade in user experience.

This is certainly something which should be a setting choice. I would like to see this changed and very quickly.

Sounds like a "fix" is needed asap.

Thank you for everybody's input here. We'll raise the priority and see what we can do.

To help us out, can you walk me through the existing user behavior? Who is having the problem and what are the circumstances around it? How do they deal with it today?

Hi Kevin,

One of the bennefits we see of the SalesLogix web client is the freedom to have as many "middle pane" views as the customer wants. If you're on the account entity and want to display all of the contacts, opportunities and recent history of an account in one, smooth scrolling page you've always been able to do that. No extra clicks, just simply using your mouse wheel to scroll up and down to find the information you require is all that's required.

By Shrinking this view in to the "letter box" which we now get in the split view, seeing all information on a page plainly and simply isn't possible any more.

One of our clients has a customised tab, this tab contains a great deal of "service" information for a contact. Lots of tick boxes, radio buttons, fields and sub-tabs mean the page is pretty large. Instead of being able to see all of this information in one page that can be scrolled, now the view is confined to a really small area of screen real estate. It's become very hard to view the information they require and on small monitor resolutions, the situation is unworkable.

This is how the software looks on a 1024x768 monitor resolution. As you can see, not ideal.
