Editable Purchase/ship date in Assets

I'd like to have a simple date field in the assets to list the purchase or ship date.  I know we have a create date, but this field cannot be edited.  Finally I'd like to see this field visible in the Assets tab view.

 

Here's why:

 

1. Although the exact date new assets are entered probably isn't super important, it would be nice to be able to adjust if for instance an Opportunity was closed today, (thus creating the asset) it may not be built and shipped for a while. It would make various reports on items sold more accurate.

 

2. We use Tickets and use the standard functionality of linking assets to Tickets.  We've been in business for 45 years, and although we do have records of some equipment dating back about that far, it's often we get a service call and need to enter older assets into our system to relate them to the tickets and returns.  If our tech support guy adds an old asset, it looks like it's new. 

 

I realize this is probably a fairly easy mod, but a date field for purchase/ship date seems to be something fairly universally needed.  (Give me kudos if you agree!)  Of course we are also trying to keep our mods to a minimum as in the past, the number of mods has made upgrading more challenging.
