Upgrading SQL server from 2005 to 2008R2 how will this affect the remotes

SLX 7.5.2

Windows 7

LAN installation

FTP Sync

We are going to upgrade our SQL to 2008R2 from 2005.  This is not the brightest question, but will I need to upgrade my remote SQL from 2005 to 2008R2 SQL Express?

If I create a new database from the 2008R2 host for a remote that is 2005 will I be able to attach the newly created database.

Like I said not the brightest question.

Thanks,

Mark

You will need to upgrade your remote's SQL too - otherwise when you go to attach the database you'll get an error complaining that a SQL 2k8 database cannot be understood by SQL 2k5 (This is what attaching directly to SQL does anyway - using Attach Remote may generate a different error but will still not work correctly).

Thanks Scott,
It was a dumb question, just got myself confused researching it.

Scott is 100% correct...

and you will need both the MS SQL 2005 and 2008 native client connectors. By upgrading the 2008 install will add it's own and the system already has the '05. A new install needs to be checked carefully.

MS SQL rule of thumb on versions:

      a - a higher version can attach/run a db cut from a lower version

      b - a lower version cannot attach/run a db cut from a higher version

Been this way since SQL server version 7.0 ;-)

Thanks RJ,
We have very few remotes (trying to get to the web or Citrix) so it has been a while since I had to cut a remote. (Rusty Nail at that). I am just covering all of the bases. Thanks again.
